The La Habra Police Department answered a call last Friday that was unlike any usual call they’ve been on before.
The LHPD was participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Relay for Special Olympics
The officers and staff volunteered to come in and carry the torch through the community as part of its leg en route to Cal State University, Long Beach where the Southern California Special Olympic games will be held June 8-9.
Officers from the LHPD received the torch at approximately 11:45 a.m. at the intersection of Puente and Lambert Roads.
The runners and some Special Olympic athletes had a police escort as it traveled the three miles westbound on Lambert and turning northbound on Harbor. The runners then carried the torch westbound on Whittier and southbound on Euclid.
Interim Chief Jerry Price carried the torch for the last leg and ran it to the La Habra Police Station.
Honks from passing cars and cheerleaders along the course showed support for the athletes as well as the LHPD runners.
The torch entered Los Angeles County Saturday when LHPD officers handed it over to officers from the Whittier Police Department, who carried it ever closer to its finals destination in Long Beach.
