Larry Harsch 1936-2018

Larry Allen Harsch, 82, of rural Ottumwa, died at 8:33 a.m.  June 1, 2018.

He was born February 9, 1936 in Ottumwa to Lloyd William and Mabel Larson Harsch.

Larry was a 1954 graduate of Ottumwa High School and earned a B.A. and M.A. from the University of  Iowa. He played baseball (Second Base) for the University of Iowa and was a 4-Year Varsity Letter Winner. He also ran track for the university.

After graduating from college Larry moved to California in 1959 where he served his country for six years in the United States Air Force Reserves stationed in San Diego. He then later became a teacher and a coach at La Habra High School where he worked for 22 years.

In 1982 he returned home to Ottumwa to be a substitute teacher at Indian Hills Community College. He also worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at Myers North Elm Condominiums in Ottumwa.

Larry was an active member of the Zion Community Church of God and the Gideons in Ottumwa. He believed in sharing God’s word to anyone who wanted to know him and the power of prayer. This was very important to him. He loved to fish and hunt and was an avid outdoors-man, traveling to Canada with his father at a young age and in his older years traveling to Canada with his son Erik and friends multiple times.

Larry Harsch loved life and brought joy and laughter to his family, friends and all who were around him. His piercing blue eyes, sense of humor, smiling face, caring and thoughtfulness will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Surviving are his children, Jill Skindlov of Hayden, ID, Erik Harsch of Fullerton, CA and Jim Harsch of Post Falls, ID; Five grandchildren, Gunnar, Konar and Erika Skindlov, Caleb and Cole Harsch, and special friend, Carolyne Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kenneth Harsch. Funeral services were June 16 at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa. Burial was at Shaul Cemetery.
